Who We Are
Pub? is a mobile application operated by Fintan Lyons (“we”, “us”, “our”), designed to help users discover pubs, track visits, log drinks, and compete with friends through social features and leaderboards.
For the purposes of UK data protection law, we are the data controller of the personal data collected through the app.

Information We Collect
We collect the following information when you use the app.
Account Information
When you create an account, we may collect:
- Email address
- Password
- Username
- Optional profile photo
Sign-In Providers
If you choose to sign in using Apple or Google, we receive information they make available to us, such as your name and email address, in accordance with their own privacy policies.
Location Information
With your permission, we use your device location while you use the app to:
- Display nearby pubs
- Provide map functionality
- Improve location-based features
We do not use background location tracking for core app functionality.
Your precise location stays on your device. We do not store it on our servers or include it in usage analytics. To show pubs, the app asks our servers for the pubs in the part of the map you are looking at.
You can disable location access at any time through your device settings.
App Activity
We collect information relating to how you use the app, including:
- Pubs visited
- Drink logs
- Favourite pubs
- Achievements and points
- Postcode progress
- League participation
- Friend connections and interactions
- Feedback you send from the app, with your app version, phone model and operating system version
User Content
We may collect content you choose to upload or submit, including:
- Pub reports, such as new pubs and suggested updates
- Photos, including your profile photo and photos of pubs
- Reports about pub photos
- Reviews, feedback or comments
Notifications
If you enable notifications, we store a push notification token so we can send app notifications such as friend activity, league updates, or important service messages.
You can disable notifications at any time through your device settings.
Technical Information
We may automatically collect limited technical information required to operate the app, such as:
- Device type
- Operating system
- App version
- Crash and performance information
Usage Analytics
To understand how the app is used and where it can be improved, we use PostHog, an analytics service whose data is stored in the European Union. Unless you turn it off, the app sends PostHog:
- Which screens you open and key actions, such as signing up, finishing the introduction, opening a pub, logging a visit, adding friends and joining leagues
- When the app is opened, closed, installed or updated
- Device model, operating system, app version, language and time zone
- Session recordings: replays of how you move through the app (screens, taps and scrolling). All text, anything you type and all images are hidden in these recordings, so they do not show your messages, usernames or photos.
This information is linked to your account by an internal account ID only, never by your email address or username. We do not use it for advertising and we do not sell it.
You can turn analytics off at any time in the app under Profile › Settings › Share usage analytics. When it is off, the app stops sending usage analytics from that device.
Tips (“Buy me a pint”)
You can choose to tip through the “Buy me a pint” link on our website. The payment is handled by Stripe on its own secure page; we never see or store your card details. Stripe shares with us the amount, the date, your name and email address as entered for the receipt, and the type and last four digits of the card.
Tips are not linked to your Pub? account and do not unlock anything in the app. Stripe’s own use of your data is covered by its privacy policy at stripe.com/gb/privacy.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Provide and maintain the app
- Authenticate users and keep accounts secure
- Display maps, leagues, leaderboards, and social features
- Improve app performance and user experience
- Understand how the app is used, for example where new users get stuck, using the usage analytics described above
- Respond to support requests and reports
- Prevent fraud, abuse, or misuse of the service
- Send notifications you have chosen to receive
Legal Basis for Processing (UK GDPR)
Under UK data protection law, we process personal data on the following legal bases where applicable:
- Contract — to provide the services you request through the app
- Consent — for permissions such as location access, notifications, and optional uploads
- Legitimate interests — for security, fraud prevention, app improvement, and operation of the service, including usage analytics, which you can switch off at any time in the app
- Legal obligation — to keep records of tips for tax purposes
Social Features and Visibility
Pub? includes social and competitive features.
Depending on how you use the app, certain information may be visible to other users, including:
- Username
- Profile photo
- Achievements and points
- Pub visits (which pubs you have visited is visible to your friends; you can turn this off under Profile › Settings › Show my pubs to friends)
- League participation
- Leaderboard rankings
Please only share information you are comfortable making visible to others.
Responsible Use
Pub? is intended as a social and discovery platform and does not encourage excessive or irresponsible alcohol consumption.
Users should drink responsibly and comply with all applicable laws relating to alcohol consumption.
Age Restriction
The app is intended for users aged 18 and over.
By using the app, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old.
We do not knowingly collect personal data from individuals under 18. If we become aware that a person under 18 has provided personal information, we will take steps to remove it.
Who We Share Information With
We may share information with trusted third-party service providers that help us operate the app, including:
- Supabase — authentication, database, and backend hosting
- Apple and Google — authentication services where used
- Expo — push notification delivery
- Cloudflare — storage of photos you upload (Cloudflare R2)
- PostHog — usage analytics and session recordings, stored in the European Union (see “Usage Analytics”)
- Stripe — processing tips made through the “Buy me a pint” link on our website
- OpenFreeMap — map images; when the map loads, your device requests map tiles directly from OpenFreeMap, which receives your device’s IP address and the map area requested, but not your account details
These providers process data on our behalf and under their own privacy and security obligations.
We do not sell your personal data.
International Data Transfers
Some of our service providers may process data outside the United Kingdom. Usage analytics are stored in the European Union.
Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place in accordance with UK data protection law.
Data Retention
We keep account and activity information while your account remains active.
You may request deletion of your account and associated personal data at any time.
We aim to respond to deletion requests within 30 days where reasonably possible.
Usage analytics are kept for 14 days and session recordings for up to 30 days, after which they are deleted automatically. If you delete your account, you can ask us to delete the usage analytics linked to it straight away.
Records of tips are kept for as long as UK tax law requires, usually six years.
Certain information may be retained where required for legal, security, or fraud prevention purposes.
Your Rights
Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have rights to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate information
- Request deletion of your data
- Object to certain processing
- Request a copy of your data
- Opt out of usage analytics (you can do this yourself in the app at any time)
To make a request, contact: fintan.lyons24@gmail.com
If you are based in the UK and believe your data protection rights have been breached, you may also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures, including trusted third-party providers, to help protect your information.
However, no online service can guarantee complete security.
Third-Party Services
The app may contain links or integrations with third-party services.
We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those third parties.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
If we make material changes, we will update the effective date shown above.
Continued use of the app after changes become effective means you accept the updated policy.
